Erich TÜRK playing organs from Kolozsvár/Cluj:

During organ concerts, one might come across quite often by compositions inspired by gregorian melodies. Along the centuries, composers answered to the challenge of “re-thinking” gregorian hymns, sequences and also more complicated, melismatic themes.

This recording offers some examples of such “re-taught” opuses: the original gregorian themes and their adaptations can be heard alternately. Beside the schola cantorum from Cluj, Erich Türk interprets famous and lesser-known works, too, of composers from the 17th–18th centuries – such as Nicolas de Grigny – to contemporary composers, playing on four different organs from Cluj.

This CD’s special feature is the piece entitled In baptismate Domini, composed especially for this recording on the demand of the Schola Gregoriana Monostorinensis, by the organist’s father, Hans Peter Türk. Thus, this CD represents the first audition of this organ work.

The gregorian chants were recorded in the Calvary Church from Cluj, in September 2009.
