St. Theresa Home for Handicapped Children
(Rehabilitation Centre)

The centre started with a few handicapped children, in one room, as the parents of these children were saddened that they had been ’left behind’ because they had not been able to  participate in mainstream activities. The activities started with a few children, and very soon the physiotherapy treatment results were both surprising and encouraging. Some of the children who couldn't even stand up started to walk. A lot of time and patience was needed, but the effort was worthwhile and produced good results.Today there are approximately 100 handicapped children receiving medical treatment and therapy every year in the Centre, and those children who cannot attend mainstream school also receive an education.
Until recently our society has not accepted handicapped children, and parents kept them at home in secret. Our Centre is giving these children a chance to interact with each other, and also withthe outside world, breaking down the barriers that existed before. Those children who are belong to the Home can often go for excursions and are given the opportunity to travel, but the most important thing for them is that they are not alone anymore. They are now accepted , cared for, and loved for who they are, by a team of three doctors and three specialist teachers.

Activities with handicapped children at the Home were started in October 1999. There are 10-12 children who attend for study on a daily basis, and another 17-20 for medical treatment and therapy.  The children can take part in lot of games and intellectually -  stimulating activities, together with special activities for mentally handicapped and children with speech problems.
