We are happy to greet you on the web page of the Government Office for Hungarian Minorities Abroad. Proceeding from the task of our Office, we would like to inform our readers about every event that occurs in the everyday social, political, economic, religious, and cultural life of the Hungarians living in the Carpathian Basin and in the world at large. The government program for the years 2002 to 2006 aims at ensuring the true balance between the three main directions of our foreign policy objectives accepted in 1990 and supported since then, namely Euroatlantic integration, good relations with Hungary`s neighbours, and nationality policy. In this framework, none of these directions can take precedence over the others and none of them can be asserted to the detriment of the others because they not only organically complement each other but are also closely interrelated. The precondition and primary condition of our effective and successful foreign policy is the stability of our region, which we can positively influence through the settlement of the situation of the Hungarian communities abroad. The government`s policy toward Hungarians living abroad wishes to support these communities in a way that will enable them to meet and confront in their native land the challenges of the third millenium. Accordingly, it supports the further implementation of the law on benefits to Hungarians abroad, and aims at the signing of new agreements acceptable to Hungary`s neighbouring states that are in harmony with the law`s original objectives, with the interests of Hungary and of the Hungarians living abroad, and with European norms.
