Neo-Nazis Parade in Slovak Town of Roznava/Rozsnyo

Neo-Nazis, dressed in the black uniforms of the onetime Fascist Hlinka Guard, paraded in the Slovak town of Roznava/Rozsnyó on Monday, June 4, defiling the statue of Hungarian freedom fighter Lajos Kossuth. Police were alerted to the possibility of hundreds of followers of the ultra-nationalistic Slovak Community and New Free Slovakia organizations descending on the town from placards inciting to hatred which appeared during the prior week. The date marked the 85th anniversary of the signing of the Trianon Peace Treaty which dismantled historic Hungary. Letters of support from Romanian and Serbian extremist organizations were also read at the centrally located Miners Square. Spokesman Marian Kotelba announced that he will make sure that the statue of the "Hungarian vulture, Kossuth" disappears from Roznava. Anti-Semitic and anti-Roma insults were also voiced, reported MTI (Hungarian Telegraph Agency), on June 6, 2005, from Bratislava/Pozsony.
