STATEMENT OF THE COUNTRY COUNCIL

AT SAHY, NOVEMBER 8, 1997
ON THE FOREIGN POLICY OF THE SLOVAK REPUBLIC

I.

The government of the Slovak Republic has in its government programme undertaken to achieve by its policy the invitation of Slovakia to NATO and to the association talks on full membership of the European Union.

II.

--The government of the Slovak Republic and its everyday policy has not achieved the invitation of the Slovak Republic to the first wave of NATO-enlargement, not even is it mentioned among the future candidates within reasonable time.

--The Slovak Republic is the only one among the associated members of the EU, among the countries of the "Visegrád Four" which has - by its policy - hindered its invitation to the European Union.

III.

The government of the Slovak Republic in its policy

hence it ignores the four principles of the European Union and this is why the EU has every right to criticize it.

IV.

Whereas the government of the Slovak Republic fails to fulfil its government programme as well as the expectations of the citizens of Slovakia, the Country Council of Coexistence summons the government to
