HUNGARY’S PRIME MINISTER VISITS RUTGERS
Dr. Viktor Orbán, Hungary’s new Prime Minister completed his US visit with delivering a lecture on October 10th to Hungarian Americans at Rutgers University. He was invited to Washington by President Clinton for talks on international issues. It was the second time that the Hungarian Alumni Association organized a program with Dr. Orbán at Rutgers University. His first talk took place in 1990, when he was a leader of the Young Democrats’ Party and a Member of the Parliament. His party won the elections this spring and, as its President, Dr. Orbán became the head of Hungary’s Government. The Hungarian Alumni Association was founded in 1960 by University students, many of whom participated in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution crushed by Soviet military intervention. The Association organizes lectures, operated a school for 26 years, published nine history books and maintains two scholarships. Dr. Viktor Orbán’s program was opened by the Association’s current President, Professor Károly Nagy. The Prime Minister was accompanied to Rutgers by Washington Ambassador Géza Jeszenszky, also a former guest lecturer of the Association. Rutgers University maintains an Institute for Hungarian Studies since 1991, offering courses in Hungarian language and culture.
