Dr. Ádám Makkai participated in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution as a college student. After the Soviet army crushed the Revolution, he emigrated to the United States, where he received a B.A. from Harvard, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Yale. Presently he is professor of English and Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He published numerous books on linguistics and a number of volumes of his Hungarian poems and translations. He edited a 1030 pp. anthology of seven centuries of Hungarian poetry, 579 poems rendered into English by 102 translators, titled: In Quest of the 'Miracle Stag', Atlantis-Centaur, Chicago, 1996.
